Obituary

Flora Girtman Obituary Ms. Flora M. Girtman, daughter of the late Theodore Monroe and Camilla Monroe, was born on December 31, 1925, in Edgar, Florida. Our beloved mother quietly entered into rest on the evening of June 8, 2015. By faith, Flora accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior, and the Seventh-day Adventist message, which was sealed by her decision to enter into the watery grave of baptism in the early 1960s. She was a passionate reader of the Word of God, and a firm believer in the power of prayer. Also, she was one of the faithful members of the Zion Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church, until her demise. She received her early education in the public school system of Putnam County; she furthered her education and graduated from Oakwood College, now known as Oakwood University. Flora retired in June 1988 from Sunland Training Center, now known as Tacachale Center, as Night Supervisor after 28 years of employment. For her tenure with HRS, she received a 20 year service award. In January 2002, she was presented an award recognizing her dedication of 33 years of service to the Treasury Department of Bethany Seventh-day Adventist Church, Palatka Florida and Zion Hill SDA Church, Edgar Florida, of the Southeastern Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. During this time, Flora generously rendered her services as a Church Pianist, Sabbath School Superintendent, Sabbath School Teacher, Deaconess, and member of the Community Service Department. Her love for the families of the community was shown as she fed them from her very own kitchen and garden, as well as, answering the call from the churches of the community to teach their Sunday School lessons. An early Head-Start program was initiated by Mr. Napoleon Strickland, another active member of the community, and Flora was very instrumental in pioneering the Head-Start program. Flora was greatly loved and cherished by all of her loved ones. She will be remembered for many things, such as, baking pound and fruit cakes, collecting cookbooks and recipes, completing word searches, winning at Scrabble, and a lover of dogs; most importantly, her unwavering and unmovable faith in Christ Jesus.
