Mr. Nehemiah Johnson Obituary Who can find a faithful, devoted, loving, honorable, caring, strong, intelligent, unselfish Christian man who is husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, servant of God and a friend to children, teens and adults? Well, Joycelyn, Orlan (Zina), Flora (Ken), Nia, Adam and Jair have found him and many others have discovered him also. His price is far above a Rolls Royce or The White House. We are today mourning his loss.
His name is Nehemiah Augustos Johnson who was born in Limon, Costa Rica on January 25, 1935 to the late Jack and Ida Johnson. He was an only child but his lack of siblings was compensated by his cousins Carl, Alberto, Tiny and Leon.
His wife Joycelyn of 52 years safely trusted in him and thus their relationship became an enduring one. Common goals and purposes knitted them together as they plotted and planned for their family's future. He did his best for his family as long as he lived.
Nehemiah prepared for his life's work by completing grade school in Costa Rica, high school and junior college in Panama and West Indies College (NCU), Jamaica WI respectively, college at Columbia Union College (WAU) MD, two years in the USA army and graduate work at Howard University, Washington DC. He learned to use the tools of his trade and was not afraid of hard work.
He was very knowledgeable about Bible Truths and world affairs which he used to enrich his life, his family's, church members, fellow workers and others who passed his way. He owned a library of more than 1000 books and highlights on many pages showed that he read some from most. He also subscribed and read multiple magazines and newspapers. One of his specialties was to collect all the different versions of the Bible that was on the market and added to that were the Bible Commentaries from different authors. Reading was his hobby along with listening to uplifting music from Gospel to Bach and he talked incessantly.
He rose early each morning for his devotion and asked God for wisdom for his daily task. He helped with the children's morning schedule at home, then drove long distance by car and train to the job. He worked for NYS personnel department for 31 years from which he retired in 2001. Prior to this while attending college, he worked for Prince Georges Hospital in Maryland. His work was of good quality even if he had to put in extra hours to achieve it. He considered investments carefully and together with his wife they purchased a house. He was not afraid of difficult times because he learned to trust God's leading.
He was concerned about social issues and frequently tried to help where and when he could, night or day. It was not unusual to see him shopping for groceries, clothes (even pampers) counseling with adults or teens, visiting prisons or courts with parents, helping students financially and emotionally, running to city hall with someone or for the church, visiting the sick in homes and hospitals, taking folks to the doctor or grocery shopping, comforting the bereaved and whatever else he could do to make someone's burden a little lighter.
He nourished his family and himself spiritually, physically, emotionally and otherwise. Jesus was the center of his life and home and his positive relationship with Jesus spilled over to others.
He was a strong and honorable person. His conversations were wise, elevating and sometimes comical. He would discuss intelligently subjects that concerned family, the Seventh-day Adventist, Seventh-day Adventist Christian education, sports, politics and the world at large. If one wanted to light a spark on most subjects just get Nehemiah involved.
