Ninon Linton

Ninon Yvonne Linton was born on July 3, 1968 in Manchester Jamaica to Edah and Stanley Shortridge.  This union produced three girls with Ninon being the eldest.  With being the eldest she knew all the characters in the stories from Content, Jamaica to New York to Florida, the dance moves from the 80’s and 90’s and she was willing to share them with all. Like all true Jamaicans one can’t have just one name especially being such a colorful character. She inherited nicknames like Nin-nee, Linty and Non.

Ninon started her education at Beaumont Comprehensive Prep School and finished of her formal education at Putman Westchester BOCES where she received a diploma in nursing.  While living in Florida she worked at Jackson Memorial Hospital, South Bay Correctional Facility and Crystal Palms Assisted Living Facility.  Ninon was well loved and respected by her co-workers, patients and residents alike. While in high school Ninon met Denise or Niecey as Ninon would call her and Niecey has been one of her best friends.  In 1988 Ninon met Lance and they were married in 1992, and the marriage did not last.  There were no children to the union non the less, she always has a lot of little ones running behind her, on her side, her lap and at times even on her back.

Her nieces, nephews and young cousins loved her a lot, Guess how much they loved her as author Sam McBratney says “to the moon and back”.  Ninon would always have a child with her.  It seems like a magnetic attraction- Ninon and a young child thus the name Nin-nee because they could not call her Ninon so it was abbreviated.

Ninon was charismatic, witty, smart, nurturing, outspoken and could certainly hold her own in any given debate. She had many interests and hobbies, she loved to shop (seeking bargains), cook, entertain and watch good movies.  She loved fashion, we could say she was a self-proclaimed fashion consultant.  She could put together an amazing outfit for any occasion (accessories included) she was always classy, dressed for any occasion, a classy diva, who lived her life boldly and unapologetically.  Ninon loved cooking and spent long hours preparing scrumptious meals, her motto “presentation is the key” was evident and there are pictures to prove it.  Ninon made every holiday, birthday or family gathering a festive occasion with her jovial spirit and keen sense for detail.  She loved Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday when family members were together, the laughter, the fun, good memories and stories were the times that we all cherish and make us all love each moment of it. 

 Ninon was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in Dec 2005. She was courageous and believed in living each day to the fullest.   She never allowed any obstacles to get her down nor did she feel sorry for herself when faced with life’s many challenges.  She displayed great strength and bravery when she declared “she had cancer.. cancer did not have her”, she started using her designer head scarves, her bright colored earrings and her lip gloss ready for battle and fight she did long and hard.   During this time Ninon and her winning spirit, pleasing personality enjoyed new relationships and friendships.  These new friends are our new family or “her village”.  They stood by her and believed in her, encouraging her every step of the way.  Her village consisted of the Oncology team at Montefiore Hospital, where the endless efforts of Dr. Braunshweig, Dr. Sicca, Ruby, Latyoya, Jacque, Patrina, Angela Solitaire and numerous others from NW Oncology nursing staff supported her during numerous doctors’ visits, chemo and radiation sessions.  She believed in and loved “her village” and was always grateful to have them on her team as they fought together and we are grateful and love them for taking care of our Ninon.  The memories and the love we share of her will live on in our hearts forever.  We take comfort in the fact that Ninon is not in any pain, no suffering and is at rest, she will be immensely missed.  She is survived by her mother Edah (Blossom) Shortridge, sisters Deon Perry, Karen Flood, Chantelle Shortridge, brothers in law Troy Perry and Nicholas Flood, nieces Taylor, Morgan and Adrian, nephews Keith and Wyatt, numerous  aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.
